Jackie Kennedy's childhood home for sale at $49.5million

The home where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis spent her teen years is up for sale - but for an extraordinary price.

AOL co-founder Steve Case is the current owner of Merrywood, the McLean, Virginia home where a 12-year-old Jacqueline Bouvier moved after her mother remarried to Standard Oil heir Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr.

Case is currently listing the home for a $49.5million asking price, which will set a record for the area if it sells for anywhere close to that number. The home also set a record when Case bought it for $24.5million in 2005.

He told the Wall Street Journal that Case and his wife are selling because they are now empty-nesters and plan to spend more time at their farm in Warrenton, which has served as their weekend home. They also recently bought an apartment in Washington, DC.

Case founded America Online (AOL) in 1991 with programmer Marc Seriff. He served as chairman of AOL Time Warner until stepping down in 2003. He currently works as the chief executive of investment firm Revolution, while his wife Jean is the chairman of the National Geographic Society.

The 23,000-square-foot Georgian home sits on seven acres along the banks of the Potomac River, just eight miles from Washington, DC.

Jackie Kennedy was born in Southampton, New York in 1929, to Wall Street stockbroker John Vernou Bouvier III and his wife, the socialite Janet Norton Lee.

Jackie's parents separated in 1936, and divorced four years later.

Her mother remarried to Auchincloss in June 1942. Due to World War II, 12-year-old Jackie was not able to attend the ceremony because travel was restricted.

But soon after, she and her little sister Lee relocated with their mother to McLean. Auchincloss also had three other children from previous marriages - Hugh III (two years' Jackie's senior), Nina (six years younger than Jackie) and Thomas (eight years younger than Jackie). The couple went on to have two more children - Janet Jennings Auchincloss (1945-1985) and James Lee Auchincloss (born in 1947).

Jackie spent the next two years attending the Holton-Arms School in Washington, DC. But in high school she left DC for Connecticut to attend boarding school at Miss Porter's in Connecticut.

However, she had fond memories of her years and summers back at Merrywood.
